Before Braces After Braces
Class III Malocclusion with a Narrow Upper Jaw This patient had an underbite and her upper jaw was too narrow. An underbite is when the lower jaw is forward of the upper jaw. As you can see in the lower left photo, her lower jaw had grown out in front of her upper jaw. She was treated by using braces to align her upper and lower teeth, expanding her palate to correct the narrow upper jaw, and using rubber bands to redirect the growth of her jaws into a normal relationship. Adult and non-growing patients with an underbite may involve surgical procedures in conjunction with orthodontics to correct skeletal discrepancies. More options are available to younger patients.
